Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul State

Bonito is a small brazilian city located at the Bodoquena Sierra in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The region has tropical climate.

The city is located in the middle of the Bodoquena Sierra plateau, where the soil is predominantly formed by calcareous rocks, these stones are the responsible for the crystal clear waters of the region, which are rich on bicarbonates, carbonates and magnesium. As the water passes through these calcareous rocks, they retain the minerals and solid particles. The region has around 100 caves. These caves are all humid and some of them have crystal clear water lakes in their interior.

The main rivers of the city are: Formoso, Prata, Perdido, Mimoso, Peixe, Anhumas, Olaria e Miranda. In the steepest regions of the Bodoquena Sierra, among the untouched forests, these rivers turn into waterfalls. Bonito has waterfalls with peculiar characteristics: medium size, rich with vegetation and in constant transformation, the waterfalls grow because of the calcareous water.
Worldwide ecotourism destination, Bonito sets apart from other destinations because of its infra-structure, organization and environmental concern.

The region’s main attractions are natural landscapes, crystal clear water rivers, grottos, caves and its amazing fauna and flora. Ecotourism has been the region’s main activity for a long time now and it is in constant improvement, always striving for minimal impact visitation practices and best quality of services. Bonito gathers a group of associations, NGO’s and governmental organizations that coordinate and organize the local ecotourism, aiming regional sustainability and environmental conservation.

The tourism agencies offer tours for every type of group, like snorkelling, rappelling, scuba diving, horseback riding, hiking, birdwatching and visiting waterfalls. Bonito is Brazil’s center of adventure and nature sports, offering different activities in more than 25 options of tours. Bonito is considered Brazil’s major ecotourism destination.
