Scuba on the Duane vessel wreck, in South Florida, U.S.A.

The Mergulho magazine 190th edition published an article about the Duaneone of the world’s most famous shipwrecks, that is consider, for many, perfect. It is located in the southern part of the U.S. state of Florida, with Gulf Stream waters and good visibility.

HISTORY

Built in 1935 in Philadelphia, the U.S.C.G. Duane was a Navy cuter and later an U.S. Coast Guard ship. During World War II, it participated in many patrols, caused the submarine sink U-175 and the Normandy invasion. In the Vietnam War, the vessel only made part of coastal patrol.

In 1985 he resigned from active service, and was bought for US$ 160.000 to be sunk along with its sister ship, the cuter Bibb, which happened only two years later. Both dived away from the coral area of Key Largo, south Florida. The two ships were the first ones to take part in the Artificial Reefs Project in Florida.

THE DIVING

Most of the dip through the main deck will be in the range of 20 meters deep. It is recommended at least two days to meet the whole vessel. The first day is dedicated to the bow and the other to the aft.

Visibility is above 30 meters because the waters from Gulf Stream and is frequented by big fish like barracudas, groupers and sharks, besides the marine flora, rich, colorful and abundant.

Dozens of operators make quality for this scuba diving, especially in summers, and planning doesn’t need be complicated: it is important, though, do a careful research on the Internet to choose a good one, since the distance and the price may be, in fact, a stolen.
